Episode 05 – “Only Two Choices?”
Halfway through the series and we finally get to see the one and only Saber in action. Though in reality, the version the girls are fighting is only a replica of the Heroic Spirit. Despite this true fact, this summoned Class Card spirit seems to have a bit more of a human side to it, evident by the animators actually showing her eyes (well, one of them). That’s one more than what we saw from Rider or Caster. Then again, not seeing Rider’s eyes is kind of part of her mystique and character.
As expected, Saber proves to be Illya and Miyu’s toughest opponent yet, utilizing powerful mana forcefields to stop their every offensive option. Just when things seem hopeless, Rin manages to draw Saber’s attention away with one of her exploding jewels. This gives Illya the brilliant idea of allowing Ruby and Sapphire to return to their previous owners. I was wondering if we’d ever get to see mahou shoujo Rin and Luvia in action outside of the first episode, and I finally got my wish.
It’s a really interesting idea, too, as the supposed main heroines acknowledge that their senpai are still stronger and more capable at this point. Though, I’m sure that’ll change in the near future. The show’s called Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya after all. I’m also not sure why Rin and Luvia get cat ears and dog ears, respectfully, along with their costumes. Maybe they had them in the first episode, and I’m just not remembering. Either way, I’m not really complaining. The cute little feathers hairpieces that Illya and Miyu have are kind of analogous, I suppose.
Seeing Rin and Luvia in action, the difference in power between them and their apprentices is apparent. However, the exciting conclusion will have to wait until next episode. According to the preview, it appears that a dramatic twist is about to happen involving Illya. I’m pleasantly surprised with how much I’m enjoying this series. It’s everything I could ask for in a relatively easy-going and comedic mahou shoujo series.
