I hear that most good relationships involve blackmail.

Impression:

Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru is a hilarious romance anime from A-1 Pictures. I was expecting your average harem going in, with hopes for a good childhood friend, but what I got from this series was more than I had bargained for. Our story begins with Eita waking up from a dream in an awkward place due to his late night studying. Eita is greeted by Chiwa, his childhood friend, and we get to see the classic bond that comes along with the trope. Unfortunately, Eita is completely against love and dating due to scars that his parents have left him with so Eita spends all of his time studying in an attempt to get a scholarship for medical school. However, when the class changes seating arrangements, Eita is put next to the school idol even though he in no way benefits from this situation. Eita’s lack of interest piques the idol’s curiosity which climaxes in a confession. Let the games begin.

Possibly the greatest harem cast I have ever encountered

Characters:

Because this is a harem anime, our main characters are a guy and some girls that like him. The guy is Eita Kidou. Eita is against love because his parents abandoned him and we all know that when you don’t want a girlfriend, you are going to get one. Being the top student in the class seems to have superseded the classic main character oblivious state of mind for now, but we are only one episode in. Also, for fans of Chuunibyou, it appears that our main character may be trying to get over a case of eighth grader syndrome. Masuzu Natsukawa is the silver-haired girl and a foreign exchange student. Masuzu is extremely popular, but we find out that she is also very against the concept of love. Somehow the crafty foreigner got a hold of a notebook that Eita filled with his chuunibyou notes and is now using them to blackmail Eita into fake dating her in order to keep away the endless confessions from other boys. Chiwa Harusaki is the orange haired girl who is Eita’s childhood friend and has yet to develop the way she has wanted. Chiwa’s parents work late and she often forces Eita to buy meat and cook for her. The two have a very close relationship and the classic childhood friend elements are everywhere. That is it for the characters that were introduced in episode one, but in order to increase the hype, here is what is known about the two girls that have yet to appear in the series. Himeka Akishino the black-haired girl who is still afflicted with chuunibyou and has exchanged many messages with Eita. Himeka often claims that she was his girlfriend and is obviously coming to “get him back” which could become complicated because she often switches between two different personalities. Ai Fuyuumi is the pink haired girl and Eita’s fiance. These girls may be my four favorite character types and this excites me.

I love childhood friends, but this series seems to have so many good characters it may be tough to choose a favorite.

Current Opinion of the Show:

I was really entertained by the first episode of Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru. That title is too damn long. The girls are interesting and I don’t see myself hating the main guy the way I often do in a harem series. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens when the fake girlfriend, childhood friend, “ex-girlfriend”/crazy girl, and the fiance all interact with one another.

Once again a relationship has started in the first episode of a series this season and that really excites me.
