Impression – Devil Survivor 2 The Animation, Episode 01

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation (Bridge) – Genre: Supernatural, Survival

1st Day – “Melancholy Sunday”

Phew, let me catch my breath because a ton of stuff happened in this first episode. The series practically jumps right into the action, starting with the main character Hibiki Kuze (CV: Hiroshi Kamiya, as in Izaya from Durarara!!) and his friend Daichi Shijima (CV: Nobuhiko Okamoto, as in Rin from Ao no Exorcist) looking into a popular website that allows you to see a friend’s face when he dies. I guess things like these are trendy with the kids these days. That day, they receive a clip of a subway derailing and killing them both. What a coincidence! They happen to be waiting for the subway when they watch the video! Even more coincidentally, the arriving train derails and kills them!

Well, almost. The hot usamimi website host appears and offers to give them another chance to live. Now if Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica taught me anything, it’s to not form contracts with anything that looks like a rabbit! I guess these guys have no choice in the matter, though. So by forming a contract and downloading a mysterious app, they’re able to survive, but wake to vicious demons eating people up. A female classmate of theirs, Io Nitta (CV: Aya Uchida, as in Kotori from Love Live!) happens to be under attack as well. Suddenly, their own demons materialize and protect them, allowing them to escape.

It turns out the entire city of Tokyo is in a state of emergency, due to an earthquake, I’m guessing. The three students decide to stick together, but only to have an evil ice cream cone attack them. Don’t you hate it when that happens? Luckily, Hibiki is able to pursue his true self and summon his own demon, the Chinese white tiger Byakko, to eat up the nefarious dessert. The episode ends off with the three kids being apprehended by the Japanese Meteorological Society. They call themselves a special government agency, and they happen to know about the existence of demons, so something tells me they aren’t the normal weather forecasting meteorologists. However, they don’t really seem all that evil, from what I can tell. But then again, I could be totally wrong. Maybe it’s just because my favorite character so far is Makoto Sako (CV: Miyuki Sawashiro, as in Celty from Durarara!!), one of the (blue-haired) heads of the society.

The animation is very nice to look at, though nothing special in terms of character movements. The demon summoning animations are very impressive, on the other hand, and I like the digital aesthetic that’s used for everything. It’s like a more mature Digimon! The music choices used in the OP and ED very interesting to say the least. The OP song sounds like a happy number you’d hear at a dance club, hardly fitting with a fight for survival like this series. The ED song is a little more fitting, yet more strange at the same time. It sounds like an American alternative rock song, but at least that tone matches the dark atmosphere of the series.

As someone who has never played these games, I don’t know what to expect from the anime. However, the story has me intrigued, even though the survival genre isn’t exactly something that excites me all that much. The idea that these demons are being unleashed to test humans is reminiscent of War of the Worlds, which I enjoyed. I’ll be interested to see how the series progresses over time and how fleshed out the story can become.
