2nd Day – “Monday of Upheaval II”
Man, is it that time already? Indeed, another episode of Devil Survivor 2 is out and how exciting it is to receive new party members. Our three heroes from before make it to the Osaka branch of JPs and are instantly introduced to two new characters. The first is Hinako Kujo, who has some interesting attire….or lack thereof. The next is some kid named Keita Wakui, who’s kind of a jerk and likes to roll solo (doesn’t bother me though, as I never used him much in my party…like Kanji from P4). So while Keita decides to run off on his own to slay some demons, the party is searching for clues for the missing Prof. Kanno. Suddenly, the JPs headquarter detects a “cracker,” who begins to tear through their system’s firewalls. This is where things get real, as having the JPs system infiltrated could lead to the loss of all magical defenses throughout Japan. At the same time, Hinako receives a dead-face clip showing Keita dead at the bottom of some stairs. Thanks to Hibiki’s critical thinking, the gang finds that Keita is at the Festival Gate and is also near the location of the cracker. They then rush off to stop the dead-face clip from actually happening and stop the cracker from infiltrating the JPs defense system.
As the gang makes it in time to save Keita from being impaled, they find that all of the other faceless demon summoners of JPs have been completely slaughtered by some unknown demon. The party decides to continue forth and destroy the wave of demons, except for Daichi, since his new demons are too weak. At this point, we know for certain that Daichi is mainly the comic-relief character. Hibiki suddenly takes on the role of the party’s tactician and sends Io and Daichi to find the cracker who is obviously responsible for the waves of demons. While Hibiki, Hinako, and Keita hold off the demons, Io finds the cracker nearby, but is surprised to find that it the person is actually the missing Prof. Kanno. Hmmm, so they were missing a genius programmer and their system is now being pulled apart like its child’s-play….I guess they didn’t put two and two together. Anywho, the evil demon who slaughtered a ton of JPs members earlier (and apparently brainwashed Kanno) shows up decides to toss Io to her demise. Luckily, Keita decides to use his demon, Beserk, to save her. By now, we know Keita is a tsundere type character. So Hibiki’s quick tactics allow him and Keita to supposedly slay the unknown demon, while Daichi smashes Kanno’s computer system.
Unfortunately for the party, they really didn’t take down the unknown demon. The demon begins to give a speech about the inferiority of humans and decides to blast the entire place with a giant lightning bolt (probably maziodyne if memory serves correctly). Before our heroes could react, Keita decides to sacrifice himself to push Hibiki out of the way of the lightning. As the smoke clears, we see that demon is gone, Daichi has successfully protected Kanno, and Keita is dead. I am quite surprised, to say the least, as I didn’t see that coming. Of course in the game, you can save Keita, but I guess they wanted to kill him off in the anime. Although I wasn’t fond of his character, he didn’t need to die. This seems to be for real, as he no longer shows up in the ending credits. That was quite an unexpected turn of events for me and I fear for the future deaths of party members. Well, until next week, “Let’s survive.” (Unlike Keita).
