Episode 04 – “How to Overthrow the Easy-Going Monarch”

Things get a bit complicated this week as we learn a bit more about the Tsutsukakushi sisters’ past. Their parents both died when they were quite young, which led Tsukiko to rely on and cling to her older sister. However, she began to push Tsukiko away as they both grew older and this is where we stand now. Tsukiko’s true intention behind her wish was to become more adult-like so that her sister would accept her, rather than continue to push her away. However since doing so, there hasn’t been any change in their relationship.

Thanks to Youto’s returned facade, he’s able to lie his way to safety to Tsukushi, telling her that it was actually his twin little brother that was on a date with Tsukiko. I think the ridiculous part of this is that she actually believes him. Later, he confronts Tsukushi about why she treats her sister so poorly when she lost her emotions for her. As expected she doesn’t buy it, and it turns out that she was the who made the cat statue in the first place! Tsukiko asks Youto what the nature of their relationship is. If they’re just together for reclaiming for emotions, what will happen after? Tsukiko doesn’t want to give up being with him, even if it means keeping the curse.

Azusa also confronts him about his feelings towards Tsukiko. He tells her that she’s the most important thing to him right now. Of course, in male romcom speak that could mean anything or nothing at all. We then find out the truth behind Tsukushi’s behavior which is a result of the very first wish made onto the cat statue. She made a wish that the two sisters could be together forever. So the reason why she wanted to study abroad in Massachusetts of all places was so the two of the them could get MARRIED. To avoid getting the “wedding blues” (cold feet, I guess?), she treated Tsukiko coldly. What a plot twist. Too bad sisters can’t get married in America regardless.

After realizing that her plan has been foiled, Tsukushi wishes for her sister’s emotions to be returned to her. The cat statue delivers in the form of her old meat bun, but Tsukiko offers it and all of the expressions it holds to her sister, in hopes that it’ll allow her to better articulate her thoughts. But what does this mean for regaining her own expressions? Does this completely blow her chances to get them back? And what the hell happened to Youto’s house?!
