The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film Pacific Rim has finally been unleashed online, and the anticipation has never been higher.

The film is set in the near future where giant monsters (dubbed Kaiju) mysteriously begin to rise up from beneath the Pacific Ocean and begin to wreck havoc. In response, humanity builds giant robots (called Jaegers) to combat the growing menace and prevent the destruction of all human life. Del Toro helms a script by Travis Beacham, and is heavily influenced by Japanese giant monster films and anime. Del Toro best describes what this film is all about in his own words: “Giant fucking monsters against giant fucking robots.”

The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman, and is set for a worldwide release on July 12, 2013.
