Impression:
Well, we finally got to see some good action in this episode. The naval attack that was planned by the humans was thwarted by the giant squid forces of the demons. They looked like giant squids, but they would probably be called krakens if you follow the style of the universe that Maoyuu has presented us. Honestly, if the human army can only put out old boats with normal soldiers, then they have no chance against krakens in a naval battle. Obviously there are some humans with greater abilities like Yuusha, but it seems that they are tough to come by. On the flip side we see demons being oppressed by some human forces. There is a single base controlled by the humans in the demon world and this sort of behavior does not sit well with Yuusha. It is obvious that this series is attempting to show the nature of war and conquest. When at war, all sides believe themselves to be in the right and once one side wins, they attempt to rule over the conquered lands. This is the unfortunate truth of war that our characters are trying to change. The very real look into the old school system of war is what makes this show very unique. However, I do enjoy the romantic element of this story as well. When Yuusha finally decides to see Maou again, we get a comedic reunion which is swiftly followed by a romantic dance. Typical romantic comedy stuff, but the tease on the kiss was kind of a let down.
Current Opinion of the Show:
Things are looking pretty good thus far. I am really excited about what this episode is setting up for because our first look into real fighting was really good. Seeing a full-scale battle was something that I was really looking forward to because the series has been awfully tame considering the fact that the story revolves around a war. On the romantic end, there really isn’t much tension because both Yuusha and Maou have cast aside all of their other pursuers because they are already in love. The painfully slow and awkward development is really the only thing that is giving the relationship room for development. I have mixed feelings regarding that, but I guess it could be used to emphasize the fact that seeking a clean end to war is the dream of a naive mind. I am looking forward to seeing Yuusha get involved in some real battles.
