Impression:
I wouldn’t say that this episode had a true central story, but that is in no way a bad thing. Ryan finally has the number one radio show in Los Angeles and things should be going great. However, Ryan is devastated when he realizes that this accomplishment does not rid him of his pain. Ryan, like a lot of people, think that a tangible victory in life can fix what is wrong with you. The only problem is that an internal issue cannot be solved through external means. So, Ryan decides that he should try helping others in order to get a sense of inner success. So, he tries to help Danny and Sonia get together. Danny hasn’t been single since sixth grade and he really needs help when it comes to charming the ladies. The only issue with that is the fact that Sonia is no ordinary lady. There are quite a few gags that are put on by Danny in order to stress his inability to talk to girls. The juvenile bullying that comes from his grade school experience should be idiotic, but Sonia actually found that interesting. Now, before you say that it has meaning because girls like jerks, this was meant to stress the fact that school yard bullying isn’t endearing. I thought it was funny, but not nearly as funny as the other stunt. Mr. K is holding a dinner party for everyone which should help Danny and Sonia get together, but the ex-soldier shows up wearing a door man’s outfit. Obviously, they have to get him into something more normal, but Sonia actually likes the big coat and hat. I can’t really describe it, but the whole door man thing really had me going. In the end, Sonia’s self sabotage leads to Danny leaving with the chef. Things just can’t go right for these two. Ryan has a really great moment where he smashes his “number one” pocket watch in order to stop time and be a reminder to Sonia that she has decided to be a better person. I am glad that we are seeing the serious side of more of the characters because they are all very well written. On the side, Owen and Anne try to find out what is up with Mr. K because he works for NASA and has created a dating site algorithm which gave Danny and Sonia a 98%. On the other hand, the algorithm gave Lauren and her husband to be a 23%, while her compatibility with Steven is a whopping 99%. The two even shared some oddly close moments together. Fun times.
Current Opinion of the Show:
Once again the mix of comedy and drama in this series has astounded me. We finally got to see Sonia outside of her crazy cat lady character and that was cool. Everyone in this group is getting over something and real people need to show real growth. Aside from that, Ryan’s growth as a person is something that I think should really endear him to the audience. Ryan is becoming a really good guy and he isn’t just that narcissist that we were introduced to. Also, the comedy was nice. Be it Terrell Owens being Terrell Owens, Mr. K having a creepy room with live sized dolls, or Danny failing as a door man, laughs are to be had. I am really happy to see this show being so strong every week and I am definitely looking forward to the reunion of Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox in next week’s episode.
