Episode 05 – “We Spent the Night Together”
It’s already summer in the world of Tamako Market, and that means pool party~! Well, not quite. The girls decide to take a trip to the public to help Tamako practice swimming for the class excursion to the beach. Tamako definitely needs the extra lesson because she’s pretty inept. All the while, Dera forces Mochizou to admit to himself that he likes Tamako, to which Dera advises him to confess his feelings during the school trip. However, Midori catches wind of the plan and refuses to let ithappen, believing that it’ll just cause trouble for everyone involved.
The romantic web (well, triangle I suppose) is growing ever more complicated, and it’s kind of difficult to tell which way it wants to go. Mochizou liking Tamako is obvious, and I think it’s safe to say that Tamako is platonic towards everyone. The biggest mystery for me would be Midori’s feelings. Does she have romantic feelings for Tamako? Or is Midori jealous of Mochizou liking Tamako because Midori actually likes him?
The show has some hints towards the latter, but that’s personally my least favorite outcome of the three. My actual favorite would be Midori and Tamako becoming a thing, but there’s no way in hell that would actually happen. I just think it’d be pretty cute (and unprecedented) if it did.
Midori asks Tamako what she thinks of Mochizou, and she responds with a simple “he’s my childhood friend,” as one would expect from her. However, when Midori asks her what she thinks of her, Tamako tells her “I love you.” Of course, it’s obvious that she only means as a friend, too. Midori doesn’t seem all that surprised by Tamako’s answer though and just replies with a shy “thank you.” In the end, Mochizou backs out of his confession, convinced that it’ll be more trouble than it’s worth. I think we’ve all been there, though.
Other highlights of the episode are watching Dera being chased by various members of the wildlife, witnessing Tamako’s odd sleeping habits, and fireworks at the beach! The next episode seems to be more shenanigans around the shopping district, possibly the popular summer mainstay: the test of courage at the graveyard, perhaps?
