Well, this won’t be coming out on Daniel’s actual birthday, but there is good reason for that. I couldn’t have my birthday post come out before his own and then I had to wait until our filler day to be able to post this, but it is the thought that counts. As is the case with Bryan, Daniel has suggested that I watch certain anime series over the years. Unfortunately, Daniel took a few years off and decided that anime was not a top priority in his life. We all know someone who has gone through that horrible phase in their life. That hiatus is the reason behind this list coming from a small pool to put it lightly. Well, I decided that I would round-up the top contenders from pre and post hiatus and see where it took me. So, here is the list of the top five anime series that Daniel has suggested to me.
5). Shakugan no Shana (J.C. Staff)
You may or may not know this, but I do not like Rie Kugumiya’s voice. I don’t know whether or not her little tsundere voice is natural or not, but I am not a fan. Unfortunately, I seem like a masochist because I watch a lot of things with her in it. Shakugan no Shana is one of those things and I have Daniel to thank for getting me into it. I enjoyed the series for the most part. The action scenes were nice and the story was pretty interesting. Well, except for season three. I hated season three. In fact, this would not be number five if that last season was written well. However, it has to make the list because I enjoyed what we got from seasons one and two. Also, I did finish the series before Daniel did. Oh well, Shana is the reason why I buy melon bread from bakeries whenever I see it.
4). Tasogare Otome x Amnesia (Media Factory)
This is a series that Daniel recommended to me early on and he ended up not liking the anime. Well, I enjoyed it. Honestly, a decently written romance is enough to make me watch a season of anime and that is what we got out of this. I think what really made me enjoy this series was the creepy stuff that went down on occasion. We are dealing with a ghost in this series. However, the main focus of this show does seem to be the romance between the main guy and the ghost. Once again, enough to get me on board. I will admit that I cried for what seemed like the entirety of the last episode. I am not so proud that I would not tell you about that. Also, really like the opening theme. I play Choir Jail when I am writing my articles on many occasions. I just wish that Daniel enjoyed this series half as much as I did.
3). Bakemonogatari (Shaft)
Here is a series that Daniel likes and finished before me. Here is a very interesting series that has Shaft written all over it. There are really two things that stand out greatly when it comes to reasons for me enjoying this series. The first is the fact that the main character tackles various entities that we would classify as fictional such as vampires. I am really big on the whole fantasy thing, so that part of the show instantly drew me in. The second thing would be the romance between Araragi and Senjougahara. It is different from most romances in very extreme ways and I think that is great. I am looking forward to more work from them because I was disappointed with the Nekomonogatari stuff. Oh well, let’s hope for season three.
2). Bleach (Studio Pierrot)
I still remember getting a call from Daniel at 11:00 pm back in middle school telling me to turn on Toonami. The first episode of Bleach was about to air and that guy could not have been more ready to wake me up because I enjoyed my sleep enough to go to bed early back in the day. Although Daniel dropped off after they saved Rukia, I stayed on because I was a fan of Shounen Jump’s big three. I still like One Piece, but Bleach and Naruto have really taken a dive. What can I say about the series? The action was really good and the story decayed slowly. I am still reading the manga and the anime really only provided me with a filler couple that I enjoyed. Aside from that, Bleach went on a little longer than it needed to. The Fullbring arc was stupid and this new thing they have going on isn’t even going to get animated. Wait, this is the number two anime on this list, so I can’t end things on a bad note. I can honestly say that the action scenes in this series have provided some of my favorite fight scenes in all of anime.
1). The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Kyoto Animation)
Well, we finally get to talk about Daniel’s favorite series. This is one of those things that gets ridiculous in all of the right ways. In fact, I have had to go back a few times in order to take in everything that has tied together in odd ways throughout the series as a whole. The writing is very complex in a way that is very rewarding for people who take the time to understand all of it. Although, I was not the biggest fan of the first season being released out-of-order. I ended up watching the episodes in chronological order because I felt like that was stupid. This is the kind of series that makes me want to go above and beyond in order to take it all in. I own every light novel that has been translated to this date and I plan to buy the rest when they come out. I still need to lend them to Daniel when he has enough free time to read them. This is another anime with some interesting ties to mystery and that is pretty cool. Daniel is still waiting on season three to come out.
Something that is Fucking Crazy:
School Days (TNK)
Just another series that Daniel told me to watch even though he hasn’t watched the actual anime. Honestly, I think that everyone should watch this anime at least once as a sort of right of passage. School Days got me ready to handle yandere at its finest and it gave me even more reason to hate people who sleep around. This was that series that taught me just how adult a regular anime could get and I guess that counts as something good. I am not sure whether or not I can say that I particularly enjoyed any one part of this series, but I can definitely say that it is memorable. I will end this section by saying that Daniel needs to actually watch this series because it is wrong to make someone watch something that you haven’t gone through yourself.
Daniel sure likes to make me watch things that he doesn’t finish. Oh well, at least I enjoyed watching most of them and that is what is important. I know that this list would be much different if Daniel had not taken a hiatus from anime because he would have watched things that I have before me and I am sure that there are a bunch of things that neither of us have watched yet that could have been a contender had the pieces fallen into place. Once again, this list just goes to show how having friends that share your interests can influence what you are exposed to. Do we always enjoy things that people tell us to watch? No, but it is a great way to help filter the giant pool of stuff that it out there. As a secondary viewer in most cases, I can definitely recommend that people watch these series and I hope that you enjoy them as much as I have. Well, maybe you should like School Days more than I did.
