Spring. The season of love, blooming life, and hayfever. If you ever want to take a break from any of these, we have an enormous lineup of strong anime titles to look forward to for the Spring 2013 season. So let’s take a quick look at what the next season has to offer, shall we? Unfortunately, I couldn’t find trailers for some of these, but I’ll try to update as I find them.

Arata Kangatari  (Satelight) – Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Guy disguises himself as a princess due to shortage of princesses. Current princess is murdered and guy is accused of the crime. Seems pretty interesting, and I’m getting a nice Magi feeling from the atmosphere.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge  (Studio Gokumi) – Genre: Action, Fantasy, Romance

So this is a show where the main character likes to cut people’s hair. Uh huh. He meets a girl known as the “Queen of Hair” who possesses uncuttable hair and ends up having to guard her from bands of murderers. What a fascinating and cutting edge premise, if I do say so myself. The trailer shows off some great music, as well as some promising animation.

Date-a-Live (AIC Plus+) – Genre: Action, Mecha, Romance, School

I’ve had my eye on this show for a while, and to be frank, it looks ridiculous. It’s trying to combine every popular trope in the industry into one show, including mechs, fantasy-style sword fights, a large cast of cute girls, a romantic comedy setting, and an inevitable harem. Don’t see what’s wrong with all this? Me neither. Pretty excited for this one.

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation (Bridge) – Genre: Demons, Supernatural

Where Persona 4 The Animation was quite lacking in the visual department, this adaptation seems to show more promise. Based on the DS game, which contains multiple endings, it’ll be interesting to see how they go about adapting it into just one series. Despite the 2 in the title, this series isn’t actually a direct sequel of anything.

Ginga Kikoutai: Majestic Prince  (Dogakobo) – Genre: Action, Mecha, Sci-Fi

The sci-fi space genre isn’t really something that piques my interests, but this could be a exception. The main team of five students are the last hope for humanity’s protection. Sounds generic, but the trailer suggests otherwise. If this were categorized as a space opera, it would probably fall under a Mozartian comedy rather than a Wagnerian drama.

Hataraku Maou-sama!  (White Fox) – Genre: Comedy, Demons, Romance

The anime with Demon King main characters just never seem to stop. Set in modern Tokyo, the Demon King Sadou is defeated by female Hero Emilia. Definitely an interesting take on the romcom and certainly looks quite promising. Of course, female knights voiced by Youko Hikasa are never a bad thing.

Hayate no Gotoku (2013)  (Manglobe) – Genre: Comedy, Parody, Romance

Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the season 3 that avid fans are rallying for, but instead a continuation of the spin-off from last year. While the spin-off didn’t have the same charm or quality as the original two seasons, it still held up in terms of enjoyable Hayate fun. Though, those new character designs will always be off-putting for me…

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (J.C. Staff) – Genre: Comedy, Romance, School

Despite having a shady title, this series seems to be fairly innocuous and fairly interesting in fact. It centers around a perverted boy with carnal desires who prays to a cat statue that he may fulfill is his desires whenever he pleases. Maybe it’s just for the titular “stony cat,” and the cute character designs, that I’m interested in this show.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride  (Arms) – Genre: Action, Comedy, Ecchi, Romance

A samurai harem and a sequel to Samurai Girls. Enough said. Though, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least little bit intrigued by this show’s premise.

Karneval  (Manglobe) – Genre: Action, Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Otherwise known as “hot guys the anime,” Karneval seems to be just that, with hints of mystery and fantasy elements. Kind of seems like a crossover of Pandora Hearts and Baccano! but maybe I’m just crazy. Definitely would not be a bad thing if it were though.

Namiuchigiwa  (Tatsunoko Productions) – Genre: Comedy, Slice-of-life

Something smells fishy…oh, it’s this show. Seems like a odd cross between Seto no Hatayome and Tsuritama.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.  (A-1 Pictures) – Genre: Comedy, School

Yes, yes, yes! I was cynical when I went into the first season of this series, but boy was I surprised by how good it was. Now, Oreimo is back with a vengeance and a new production studio. Luckily, A-1 Pictures is awesome, and the lovable character designs and great animation from the first season is intact. One of my most anticipated shows for next season.

Photo Kano  (Madhouse Studios) – Genre: Romance, School

Based on a dating sim for the PSP, this series features a harem in which the main guy has a DSLR camera. Interesting. The girl cast looks promising, voice-wise, as we have Chiwa Saito, Miyuki Sawashiro, Hisako Kanemoto, and Kanae Itou, to name a few. Okay, never mind the lineup is spectacular.

RDG: Red Data Girl  (P.A. Works) – Genre: Fantasy

P.A. Works makes its return with quite a mysterious title. Its setting, art style, and music are highly reminiscent of Shinsekai Yori. It centers around a girl named Suzuhara Izumiko who destroys all electronics she touches and discovers that she is actually a representative of a goddess, charged with some obligatory duty.

Shingeki no Kyojin  (Production I.G.) – Genre: Action, Fantasy

This is another show that I’ve had my eye on for a while, simply for the reason that it looks amazing. The title means “Attack on Titan” most likely because the show is about huge giants attacking humans. I don’t know, just a guess. The animation looks sick as hell, which is great because we seem to be in a shortage for good action anime lately. This is definitely a show that everyone should look out for.

Suisei no Gargantia  (Production I.G.) – Genre: Action, Mecha, Sci-Fi

It looks like Production I.G. is two for two in terms of amazing looking action series next season. This time, the setting turns out to be a dystopian future where the Human Galactic Alliance are fighting a losing battle against the nefarious “Hidiaazu.” The animation, particularly around the city, looks phenomenal.

To aru no Kagaku no Railgun S  (J.C. Staff) – Genre: Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

Our favorite group of female espers (well, one isn’t) is back to kick some ass. This is a continuation of the first Railgun series, which is a side-story of the main Index series. This season will focus on a plan to have strongest level-5 esper, Accelerator, achieve level-6. Crazy stuff.

Uta no Prince-sama 2000%  (A-1 Pictures) – Genre: Comedy, Romance

The second season to the successful reverse harem series. Even I must admit, these are some good looking men.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.  (Brains Base) – Genre: Comedy, Romance, School

That mouthful of a title roughly translates to “My youth romantic comedy isn’t what I expected.” This type of self-awareness can only lead to greatness, in my opinion. The character designs looks great and hopefully their personalities are as creative as the title. Since the animation is being done by Brains Base, I think we can expect some nice colorful scenes to be had. Definitely looking forward to this one.

Yuyushiki (Kinema Citrus) – Genre: Comedy, School, Slice-of-Life

Yuru Yuri, anyone? If this show’s anywhere as funny as Yuru Yuri is, then it would seem that we have a winner on our hands. The only difference is that this series only centers around three girls, who happen to be in a data processing club. These girls also have some very interesting eyes, too.
