Episode 05 – “School Paradise?”
Moritani finally joins the ESP Research Society this episode, giving it its fifth and final member! Like with Kotoura and Manabe, Mifune asks Moritani what her special ability is. Hilariously, she says her power is psychokinesis, which she is able to show off by blowing out candles with the force of her fist. Awesome. The club members also spend the Saturday night at Kotoura’s new apartment (closer to Manabe now). It’s an evening filled with cooking misadventures, bad psychic flicks, and odd sleeping arrangements. In fact, Kotoura falls off her bed in her sleep and lands next Manabe, which Mifune takes the chance to snap a quick picture.
Before leaving, Manabe gives Kotoura a silly flyer of Moritani’s dojo, which Kotoura takes much joy in laughing at. The picture’s so funny that she can’t look at Moritani with a straight face anymore. I kind of feel bad for Moritani because she gets picked on a bit in this episode. It also seems like her main impetus for joining the club is to get closer to Manabe. There’s still a lot of tension between the two, though, which yields some very humorous results.
The second half of the episode is devoted to Kotoura involuntarily participating in her class relay race. Despite being completely inept, the cheers from her classmates give her the drive to continue. Cheesy, I know, but the show avoids further cliché by having Kotoura totally trip. It’s okay, the music during this part makes up for it.
Speaking of music, we have a new ED to commemorate the club’s final formation! It, like the rest of this episode, is just plain hysterical, and it’s nice to see this series moving more towards the romcom that it was advertised as. Of course, I can just tell that we can expect to see more drama in the future, somewhere. But it seems for next week, we have the beach episode!
B.W.
