Impression:
Well, I was wondering how they were going to do a beach episode. Red is growing restless because he isn’t working. Being on standby isn’t always as great as it seems. I tend to grow pretty restless if I spend more than two weeks doing nothing of true importance. Even writing these things count as fun for me, so I am talking about actual work. Red tries looking for work, but things don’t go too well. He may be a career soldier, but Red isn’t strong physically speaking and living in space has left him without the ability to do much of the work that they do on Gargantia. Kind of like a high school graduate looking for more than entry-level work. It turns out that Red’s rest is interrupted by more rest when the fleet declares a calm day. When there is neither a current nor wind, the fleet shuts down and the maintenance crew is the only group that works. Pinion takes the kids out to grill some meat, but he seems to be dodging work. Here is the beach episode. Amy and the girls decide to swim while the cooking is on hold due to lack of power. Red ends up in the water with a very concerned look on his face. The dude has probably never been submerged in water. It seems like all of the girls have swimsuits. I find this odd because I don’t know how things like that are produced on a fleet of ships. We did see a rancher that had some cows, but they even said that meat isn’t always easy to get. I assume that cotton and other such materials aren’t abundant either. I guess that it fits in with the free lifestyle that the people live. Red ends up having to track down some special sauce in a bad area. The dude is assaulted by cross dressers that want him to become a male escort. That was kind of funny I guess. Not much really happened this time around.
Current Opinion of the Show:
I am still really enjoying this show. However, it has gone from blowing me away to simply being captivating. I am getting that relaxed feeling from the story that they are trying to teach Red, but I am waiting for that big event. Bryan likes to describe this series as Dances with Wolves and Tarzan in space. Not a bad description in my opinion, but that is what may hurt the pacing a little bit. I feel like something that functions in the same vein as those series needs that big event in order to capture the audience. Things like Dances with Wolves, Tarzan, Pocahontas, and Avatar don’t feel slow because they are movies. I fear that they may spend about two-thirds of the series being a little too slow with the action. I personally don’t care, but other fans may get impatient. That is really the only negative thing that I have to say about this series right now. I am enjoying the fact that Chamber hasn’t lost his impact on the story now that we are focusing on Red and he has learned quite a bit of the Earth language. I would like to know how they came up with both the Earth and space languages. Neither are Japanese and I didn’t recognize them. Oh well, I am looking forward to Red actually having some fun because he didn’t seem too thrilled in the beach episode.
