Impression:
I loved this episode. The main theme that we are introduced to is: “If today was your last day on Earth, what would you want to do?” The interesting thing that we get this time around is what I want to say is a lack of a true main story. Of course we have Ryan’s story which is shared with Anne. Steven made plans for Ryan and himself to go on their annual visit to wine country, but Ryan needs a date. Who better to take with you than your resident angry lesbian. It is revealed that Anne visits her wife’s grave everyday which doesn’t seem healthy so Ryan takes it upon himself to help Anne move on. The two attempt to get their Jimmy V day. Jim Valvano was a prominent sports figure and an event more prominent figurehead for cancer. The goal is to laugh, think, and cry all in one day and watching Ryan and Anne take this journey together was very heart warming. When Anne thanks Ryan at the end of the day, you get a great feel for their growing relationship which I believe is becoming my favorite part of the series. On the other end, the group is having a holiday/end of the world party. Mr. K insists that the world is ending and wants to see everyone he loves plus Yolanda. We get our usual crazy Mr. K which is fun, but the bigger story is the fact that Lauren’s boyfriend Wyatt, played by Hayes MacArthur, plans to propose to Lauren. Wyatt is essentially the perfect boyfriend and we get to see the anxiety that Lauren has when the idea of marriage is put out there. After Lauren realizes that doubts come with change and that isn’t a bad thing, Ryan and Anne go through their Jimmy V day, and the group watches the clock hit midnight on December 22 to see that the world has not yet ended, we realize that life needs to be lived. I really enjoyed the point being made where you need to enjoy what you have and spend time with those you care about. It is a concept that some may say is overdone, but I believe that, when done well, it a message that should be heard.
Current Opinion of the Show:
The show is really impressing me with the level of attachment I am feeling towards the characters. We may see a slight drop off in the serious bonding after the holidays roll by, but I do still love the comedy and the serious aspect of the show has been done very well thus far. I can’t wait for the next episode.
