We all know that the Avengers project that was put out by Marvel has been very successful and as a comic fan I was very happy. For the most part the movies were good, if not great, and I was extremely excited for a possible Justice League movie. I like Marvel, but I love DC and the recent success of the Dark Knight movies were promising. When Warner Bros. decided that they were going to put the wheels into motion on a Justice League movie, with a goal of releasing it in 2015, I was really happy. However, things are looking a little rocky.
Technically you don’t have to introduce every member of the team prior to the group movie release. Mark Ruffalo did not get his own Hulk movie prior to the release of the Avengers and that worked out just fine, but the Wonder Woman fiasco is a different story. We have seen in recent years that Wonder Woman needed a tune up. Lose the invisible jet and the lasso’s truth powers. Letting Wonder Woman fly on her own and have a really strong lasso was a good way to keep her from seeming too cheesy. I liked how Wonder Woman was portrayed in Justice League Unlimited, but it may have been too soon for the live action seen. I am not saying that you can’t make Wonder Woman a good character in a live action movie/series, but William Moulton Marston sure couldn’t get the job done. The show never saw the light of day as the series was cut after the pilot got screened. I would say that one shaky pillar would be fine, but we have a few more issues.
The question you then have to ask yourself is whether or not you use the characters from the recent DC movies. The Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie has been heavily demonized. I feel that the movie suffered from poor direction because of the lack of time they spent on Oa and a few other things that I will not get into at this point in time. The point I am trying to make is that you have a cancelled series and a movie that flopped as part of your Justice League foundation. Green Lantern and Wonder Woman are indispensable members of the team and I am concerned that, regardless of how good the possible Justice League movie could be, people who are following the process may have a bad taste in their mouth. However, not every DC work failed.
There is no question that the Dark Knight trilogy was fantastic, but I am going to tell you why this should not be reassuring when you are talking about the Justice League movie. Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale have both said that they were essentially done with the series because the story was told the way Nolan wanted it to be. On top of that, a lot of fans believe that the Dark Knight should be kept as a separate entity which is something that I agree with. The way it was told had a great ending and it just feels like it would be wrong to mess with it. Some have speculated that Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be the new Batman. I have no issue with him as an actor, but once again the fans are mixed on the issue. Robin Blake is not an existing Robin which has some fans up in arms. I don’t mind a new Robin, but it will sort of split people the way it already has. So once again, you have to question whether or not you would use these existing DC characters.
DC is still making movies which is a good sign I guess. We have yet to see the Man of Steel movie, but it is already coming under fire because of the crotch. Honestly, can we just take a step back and watch the movie before we judge it. Christopher Nolan has had a hand in the movie, and if anyone knows anything about making a successful DC film, he does. Let’s just wait for it to come out and if you don’t like it after watching it, feel free to let everyone know why. The thing to look at is the fact that our mainstay leaguers are being reintroduced into the world and DC is at least trying to get people excited about the Justice League project.
It was recently announced that DC wants Darkseid to be the main villain in the Justice League movie and I am fine with this. Darkseid has been a big part of the DC universe and he is one of the most powerful individuals the Justice League has ever seen. Even IGN recognized his prowess by naming Darkseid number 6 on their top 100 all time comic book villains list. We all have our opinions, but there are worse villains that could have been chosen. I am really happy about this because now the Justice League movie is starting to feel real to me. However, the fact that the villain choice seems to be the most solid part of the project is what concerns me the most.
Now that all of this is known, we have some questions to ask. Do we use the same actors and stories from the failed movies and series? Do we mess with the Dark Knight? Do we use a Batman that hasn’t been a part of the comics? Do we use an entirely new cast? Which leaguers do we put in the movie? Are we trying to compete with Marvel? Thinking about all of this makes my head spin. The DC universe is vast and the main league cast is rarely the same. Anyone who has seen Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans, or Young Justice knows that it is possible to portray DC teams well, but none of those were feature films. Ultimately I wish for the success of this and all other DC projects because I love DC.
