Today is a good day…for demons!
The World God Only Knows 3 + Spin-Off OVA
In an issue of Weekly Shounen Sunday, a third season of The World God Only Knows was announced, and while this alone may not seem like big news (since the end of season 2 more or less telegraphed an eventual continuation of the series), an spin-off OVA featuring everyone’s favorite yandere idol, Kanon Nakagawa, was also announced! For those of you aren’t familiar with the series, The World God Only Knows follows the visual-novel master Keima Katsuragi as he and his demon buddy, Elsie de Lute Ima, save girls from evil spirits by having them fall in love with him. I personally love this series and Kanon is one of my favorite characters from it, making me doubly excited for this announcement.
The game centers around Hope’s Peak Academy, in which only the best athletes and geniuses can gain admission. However, the protagonist, Makoto Naegi, seems to have no outstanding qualities other than simply being outstandingly lucky. One day, all the students are trapped in an alternate version of the school by a crazy bear (Persona 3 + 4?), and the only way any of them can escape is to murder a fellow classmate. I’m sure demons are involved in this game as well.
When I first saw screenshots of this game, I became interested because of the nice artwork and character designs, which gave off a very SMT: Persona vibe. However, I was met with much disappointment when I discovered that Dangan Ronpa, a visual-novel released for the PSP in 2010, is a Japanese exclusive game. However! The announcement of an anime series has finally brought me up from my depths of woe. Seiji Kishi (Persona 4 The Animation) is directing the project, which brings me mixed feelings. While the P4A’s adaptation of the PS2 game was not wholly bad, the animation quality and pacing of plot was quite questionable and shaky at times. Needless to say, I have fingers crossed for this one.
Dangan Ronpa is set to be aired Summer 2013.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
As with Dangan Ronpa, P4A’s Kishi will be heading the adaptation of Atlus’s SMT: Devil Survivor 2, released for the Nintendo DS in both Japan and America. In typical SMT fashion, the game is set in modern day Japan, where people are receiving mysterious emails telegraphing various disasters and deaths. After being informed of plot to destroy the planet, it’s up to the nameless protagonist to contract with demons and solve the mystery behind these emails. Like Dangan Ronpa, I have reservations about this adaptation, particularly since game adaptations tend to be overshadowed and heavily criticized by the fans of the original medium.
The Devil Survivor 2 anime is scheduled to be aired in the Spring 2013 season.
