Director Yasuhiro Yoshiura (Pale Cocoon, Time of Eve) has a new film coming out called Sakasama no Patema (Patema Inverted). The trailer for the film began streaming this week and is now up for viewing on Youtube.
The film takes place in a world where underground tunnels stretch everywhere, and the entire population lives below the surface. A young girl named Patema loves to explore these tunnels, despite her elders expressing great concern over the dangers in these tunnels. While exploring the “danger zone”, strange things happen and she ends up meeting another boy named Age.
I really like the concept of parallel worlds, presented as these two young people who are of opposite gravitational pulls. It’s a really great image and has the potential to pan out into a really great love story about star-crossed lovers.
There’s also a series of shorts titled Sakasama no Patema: Beginning of the Day, that serves as a prequel to this movie. All 4 episodes are out now and you can find them with English subtitles if you look around hard enough. I really like Director Yoshiura’s sci-fi works and he always has fascinating story concepts, so I’m highly anticipating this movie when it is released. With the success of his recent Time of Eve Kickstarter, the chances that this will also see an official international release aren’t too far off. I’ve got my money ready.
Sakasama no Patema will be released in Japanese theaters on November 9, 2013.

I would like it a lot if there were some sort of international/film festival release for the film like with Redline, but that’s probably unrealistic.
There would be a better chance of that happening if it were picked up by a big distribution company like Funimation, but this film would need to generate a LOT of interest as well.
