Episode 07 – “May 13”
Do you believe in second chances? Do you believe in a third, fourth, ad nauseum chance? Well, with the magic of visual novels, it’s possible to replay your life until you find yourself going down the correct route! I suppose the downside to this is not knowing what the “correct” path is or if such a thing even exists at all. Oh yeah, and there’s the possibility of living out a miserable outcome over and over again. Recent examples of such fate include Steins;Gate and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, but Little Busters ~Refrain~ came before both of these.
After last week’s terrible outcome, we find ourselves back on May 13th: the day Kyousuke returned to the school and the setting of the first episode of the entire series. So what’s the difference between that time and this time? This actually took me a while to figure out, but I think that’s kind of the point of how the story plays out. The first time, Kyousuke excitedly implemented the baseball plan to gather Little Busters. But after seeing the plan fail (who knows how many times), Kyousuke seems to have lost all hope of preventing the “bad end.”
In this reality, we get to see how Riki attempts to reconcile everyone’s emotions. Though, with Kengo and Masato at each others’ throats and Rin a nervous mess, it seems to be an impossible task. If Kyousuke couldn’t do it, does that mean it’s hopeless for Riki? What’s interesting to me is that everyone except Riki and Rin seems to know about the multiple realities. They warn Riki that baseball is not the correct way to proceed because unbeknownst to him, it led to the failed scenario from last time. With Masato finally taking his leave, the Little Busters essentially gets reduced to nothing.
And with nothing to work with, Riki takes it upon himself to rebuild the Little Busters. Seeing his undying determination, while the camera pans around to all of the different locations where he met the Little Busters members, gave me chills. Now I can’t wait to see what happens next. Will he reunite with each of the members one by one? I would love to see that.
“To live means to lose.”
