I am a spoiled person. I have owned almost every video game console and I have my parents to thank for that. There was a period of time when I didn’t have access to an Xbox 360 so I had to play a little catch up last year and I found quite a few games that I really enjoyed. Obviously, I should be able to find a handful of games that I enjoy on a system with a library that is as vast as the one for the Xbox 360, but I just felt that these games needed some attention. A few of them are games that you might not have played, so you should definitely give them a chance.
Bioshock is a game that you have probably heard of. You find yourself in a futuristic society with technology that is very out-of-place in the current time period. Well, technology does not always bring about peace because things are not going to well in this supposed paradise. So, it is your job to pick up the pieces. What I really like about this game is the mild horror element that a part of the gameplay. I have friends that couldn’t play this game at night. The graphics and sound were phenomenal when the game first came out and I do believe that it has some nice lasting value in those departments. The gameplay is fun and the mix of first person shooter and use of supernatural powers make for a very interesting experience. I would say that the thing that makes this game unique is the quality of the story. This game has an extremely riveting plot and I believe that it functions well enough in that regard to be made into a movie. The cinematic element of games pretty important nowadays which means that the stories can easily make or break the game itself. I know that I am not the first person to recommend Bioshock, but that is because it is that good. There is a second game that is already out and a third game in the Bioshock series that is coming out this year.
4). Akai Katana
This is a game that you might not have heard of. Akai Katana is a bullet hell game on the Xbox 360 that didn’t come over to America for quite some time. Unfortunately, like with many foreign titles, the game did not sell very well when it came over here resulting in huge price cuts and even more reason for developers to not port their games. This is a much bigger issue on the Xbox 360 than any other system because I would say that Microsoft has put out the most western console in the bunch. I would like to point out that this game is definitely worth your time. Bullet hell games are not for everyone, but people who do like them will get a kick out of this one. The graphics are what you would expect in the in-game experience because these games are not really built for their cinematic flair, but the cutscenes are a different story. The sound is nice and the gameplay isn’t too ridiculously challenging. Some people get scared off by screens that have so many projectiles that the game begins to lag. The story isn’t bad and anyone that enjoys those anime style games will get a kick out of this one. I am recommending this game based on the extremely fun gameplay for the most part. Let’s try to support these titles on the Xbox 360 so that we can get more ports for today’s best-selling system.
3). Halo 3
I am going to be blunt with you, if you do not own Halo 3, then you are not using your Xbox 360 correctly. What you are looking at is the consensus best member of Microsoft’s flagship series. We all should know the importance of Halo. It is the reason that people need Xbox Live. It is a game that was so important that they got a new team to work on continuing the series after Bungie went independent. Rooster Teeth made a critically acclaimed web series using the games for their characters. Obvious accolades aside, I really enjoyed Halo 3. The game was the first Halo to offer HD graphics and the sound quality of the games always earn high praise. What sort of separates the Halo Series from the Call of Duty series is the story which was no slouch in this installment of Master Chief’s saga. However, what truly made Halo 3 great was the multiplayer. People would still argue that Halo 3 has the best multiplayer experience in the series and that is after Halo 4 came out with its own damn good multiplayer. Up until the release of Halo 4, Halo 3 was still the most played Halo game on Xbox Live. That beat out Reach and ODST and it gave the game ridiculous lasting power. Obviously, games with multiplayer tend to have most lasting value than ones without it. I recommend this game because it is my favorite Halo game. I mean, Halo is the reason that people buy Xbox’s. Enough said. Obviously, you should play Halo and Halo 2 before playing this game. The first Halo has an HD remake that is out for the Xbox 360 with brand new material.
2). Viva Piñata Trouble in Paradise
I think that people need to really give this game a chance. The first edition of this game came out at the release of the Xbox 360 and it kind of became the butt of a lot of jokes. I mean, the game seemed very childish and the first one was not ridiculously good or anything like that. It did get its own cartoon on television, but I feel that it did more harm than good for the game. However, when the second game came out, reviewers were very surprised by the quality of the game. Build up environments to attract new animals to your land. Anyone that thinks that is boring better not be a Harvest Moon fan. I will say that a game like this will not appeal to everyone. However, the building of your own little community with interesting comic graphics and gameplay that is really enjoyable is a pretty common concept. People enjoy Sims and Harvest Moon. What I am telling people to do is look past the E rating and the kid game stigma because you will be missing out on one hell of an experience if you don’t. I love games like this and Viva Piñata Trouble in Paradise has given us one of the best casual gaming experiences out there. You do not need to play the first game in order to play this one. This is one of those cases where you are better off just having played the second one.
1). Gears of War 2
One of the things that makes the Xbox 360 so great is its access to the best first person shooters in the gaming market. Halo is great, you can play Call of Duty on the Xbox 360, and Gears of War is something that people should know about. I would say that it is the little brother of Halo in the Xbox 360 exclusives department because it doesn’t get the community recognition that Halo gets, but it is a damn good series. My favorite game in the franchise is the second one. I would personally rank them 2,1,3 in descending order, but none of them are bad. The graphics in this game are very interesting. You get the feeling that you really are at war. Sometimes things look a little too clean in Halo for me to feel real tension. The environments give you a feeling of tension that adds to the somewhat apocalyptic war zone style that the story is trying to impress upon the players. The gameplay is very nice. We need more good third person shooters. I personally like both styles, but I would say that people have their preferences regarding first verses third person shooters. The gameplay is actually what hooked me in this game. Active reload really helps you out when you get the hang of it. The multiplayer in this game is very fun and you should jump on Xbox Live because it gets kind of lonely at times. You should play the first Gears of War before you jump into this one. If you like the series, there is a third game that is already out and a prequel that is coming out later this month.
Game that I still Need to Play:
I know that I should have already gotten into this series, but I am not made of money. I do plan on getting this game for the Xbox 360 very soon and giving it a try because it seems like the kind of game that I would love. A mix of first person shooter and RPG sounds like a dream come true. Also, I really like the art style in the game. There is already a second game in the series so I need to hurry up and play this game.
The Xbox 360 has a huge library of great games and the older ones have really seen a huge drop in price at places like GameStop. I think that you can find every game on this list for twenty dollars and below which is amazing considering how good they are. So, before you run off to buy the PS4, Wii U, and new Xbox, you might want to go back and try out some of the games that you might have missed on the Xbox 360. It will be worth your time and your pocketbook will appreciate it.
